Petalingjaya- Cakrabuananews – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed confidence in the transition plan between him and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, adding that the exact date will be discussed later.

The PKR president said he was bound by the Pakatan Harapan consensus and pointed out that Dr Mahathir had also been consistent with regard to his promise to step down.

“In my weekly sessions with the Prime Minister, I don’t find any problem in terms of the issue of transition and I am satisfied with his continued assurance and guarantee that he will honour the promise of surrendering power,” he told reporters after a dialogue with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam Thursday (Oct 3) morning.

Dr Mahathir had reportedly said in New York recently that it is most likely he will be in power for no more than three years before bowing out.

“I promise that I would step down before the next election and give way to another candidate. So, I may have at the most three years, perhaps,” he said.

The remark had drawn criticism from several senior PKR leaders calling for an exact date to be fixed for Anwar to become the next Prime Minister.

Anwar said that there will be a problem “when we have to pick and choose what the Prime Minister has to say”.

Asked how he felt, despite having no time frame, the Port Dickson MP said, “We view it positively.

“We have always said we should not, at least publicly, state a time because that would render the rule of the Prime Minister as quite ineffective.

“I do not see it as a problem but that will not stop people from speculating. There was this clear understanding, to my mind, except for a specific date,” he added.

Pressed to reveal whether no proper time frame was discussed, Anwar said there were discussions but these could be open to interpretation.

“To suggest that there were no discussions is not quite right,” he added. (adz/the star)
